The California DREAM Act, California Bill SB 160, has moved from the legislature and is sitting on Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk awaiting his signature. The bill would give financial aid for college to illegal aliens. Schwarzenegger has until the end of the month to sign or veto the bill.
I'm not sure which way he's going to go on this one. He has stood against drivers licenses for illegal aliens, but then supported in-state tuition for illegal aliens. Just recently Schwarzenegger was reluctant to send National Guard troops to the border.
The bill was written by the same schmuck, Senator Gil Cedillo, who keeps sending the drivers license for illegal aliens bill into play (see here, here, here and here).
Just recently the same legislature voted in favor of a universal health care system in California that would give illegal aliens free reign of the health care system. Grandma's sick in Mexico? No problem, sneak her across the border illegally and let the American taxpayers foot the bill for her daily hospital room costs and medication.
They aren't trying to turn California into Mexico, they're trying to turn American taxpayers into slaves while Mexicans can just come across the border and receive better benefits than the working people get.
San Jose Mercury News
A controversial bill that would allow illegal immigrants to get state financial aid while attending California's public colleges and universities is now in the hands of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger ...
...
The Legislature approved SB 160 on Aug. 31, voting largely along party lines with Democrats in support. If it becomes law, undocumented students who graduate from California high schools would be eligible to compete for state financial aid [against citizens and those here legally - Digger]. Students attending state community colleges could apply to have their fees waived.
...
Federal legislation known as the DREAM Act, now pending in Congress and approved by the Senate in May, would go one step further: It proposes to give illegal immigrant students a chance to become legal residents, apply for federal aid and grants, and eventually become citizens.
An estimated 65,000 undocumented students graduate each year from U.S. high schools.

"We have a crumbling infrastructure, a failing educational system, a collapsing public health system," said FAIR spokesman Ira Mehlman, "and California legislators spend most of their time dreaming up public benefits for illegal aliens. This rewards people who broke the law and punishes people who have played by the rules.''
I couldn't agree more. California schools have fallen from the best in the nation to near the bottom of the pack. They used to be tops, but just over the past 4-5 years California has gone from 29th in the nation in 2002 to 46th in the nation in 2005.
What has changed in those 4 years in California other than a massive influx of illegal aliens? The teachers from California haven't magically turned into idiots over 4 years and the legal English speaking students haven't become totally idiotic (though some would argue that). No! It is the influx of uneducated, non-English speakers who have poured across the border, increased class sizes to massive scales and diluted the grades of those who speak English and those here legally.
Which other states are on the bottom of the education ladder with California? Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. Hmm, what do they have in common I wonder?
This bill is a travesty and takes from the mouths of legal residents and citizens and gives all the opportunity of those two groups to illegal squatters and lawbreakers.
You can still have an impact and stop this! call Arnold Schwarzenegger and tell him to veto this unAmerican bill!

I am an American. I had ancestors on the Mayflower. I had over a dozen ancestors who fought in the American Revolution. My "newest" immigrating ancestor came to the US in the 1850's. All of them came here legally, learned English, integrated quickly and paid taxes.
I went to an American college where I spoke English well. I worked very hard and devoted myself to my education for four years. I achieved a 4.0 GPA and won academic awards. I did not receive a cent of financial assistance despite my perfect grades and below poverty level income. I now owe tens of thousands of dollars in loans.
I have no medical insurance and often have to ignore my health needs, but the state I live in (California) spent over 2 billion last year on medical care for illegals.
There is already something seriously wrong with this picture. If a natural born, poor American with an excellent academic history, (and the potential to contribute greatly to our future,) cannot receive financial aid for college, there is no way that an ILLEGAL immigrant should.
