Democrat Gil Cedillo has once again pushed this bill. I've lost count of how many times he's put it up. About 70% of California voters are against illegal alien drivers licenses, but it keeps being brought up by Gil Cedillo, open borders proponents and those who wish to legitimize those here illegally. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's deputy chief of staff
has stated that the Governor will once again veto the bill. He did so in
September 2004 and stated in
February 2005 that he would do so again.
Why do the voters stand for their representatives continually undermining their choice? Vote them out already!

Sen. Gil Cedillo, the Los Angeles Democrat carrying the bill, said the federal law settled the annual dispute.
Referring to President Johnson's signature on the Voting Rights Act and former Alabama Gov. George Wallace's rejection of school integration, Cedillo said: "The governor has a choice. He can either be an LBJ or a George Wallace."
Republicans rejected the comparison.
"We are a society based on laws," said Assemblyman Mark Wyland, R-Del Mar. "The law has meaning. It undermines our government when we reward breaking the law."
The Senate also passed the bill, but by a thin margin.

The state Senate today passed the measure and sent it to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, despite signals that the Republican governor would veto it. With limited debate, the Senate this afternoon approved the bill on a 21-15 vote, the bare minimum needed for passage in the upper house.

Andy Ramirez, founder of the citizen group Friends of the Border Patrol, said the bill is "an absolute sham."
He said he lobbied the governor's staff to urge a veto.
The driver's licenses "are de facto ID cards," Ramirez said, and the Legislature "is trying to legitimize them being here. If you give them a driver's license, you are legitimizing them and approving of what they have done, which was to break the laws of our nation."

Gil Cedillo's obsession with an alternative Driver's License is misguided, as is California's incorrect understanding of DMV regulations and laws passed which result in the suspension of drivers licenses and impound of vehicles. A careful reading of the DMV handbook, and even more important, the personal experiences of myself and thousands of other California drivers, reveals that the vast majority of Californians whose licenses are suspended and whose vehicles are impounded when they drive on a suspended license, are NOT illegal aliens. Even more disturbing is the fact that most suspensions/impounds are not even related to the license holders activities while on the road.
Did you know that ANY FTP (Failure to Pay) or FTA (Failure to Appear) will result in suspension of your driving "privilege"? Did you know that the FTP/FTA does NOT have to be related to traffic or driving but can because of fines and/or infractions for ANYTHING!!! For example, if a child is truant, the parent can be ordered to court and fined. If the parent doesnt appear and/or pay the fine, then his or her license is suspended and any vehicle that he/she is driving can be immediately impounded.
Or perhaps it is a vandalism charge, or a fishing license violation...or maybe failure to pay child support...or even a library card fine! It could even be failure to pay the fees for ANOTHER license...such as a beautician or contractor.
But the most frequent is for "financial responsibility". For instance, if another driver hits you from the rear, while you are at a dead stop in traffic on the freeway and you dont have liability insurance, then YOU are given a ticket for failure to show proof of insurance. By the way, having liability insurance does NOT help you collect your damages from the party who injured/damaged you. Then YOUR license is suspended, unless you pay a $1,400 fine and you are also precluded from suing the party who hit you and/or collecting any damages....even if you are not at fault.
If you dont pay the $1,400 fine...your license is suspended and then if you drive, your car is impounded.
These laws were passed by promoting the FEAR of illegal immigrants driving without licenses and/or insurance. However, the truth of the matter is that the vast majority of Californians impacted by these laws are American citizens, who have or had valid drivers licenses and may even have insurance. These laws are being used to collect millions of dollars in the State of California from hardworking American citizens who have the unfortunate situation of being POOR!
Mr. Cedillo would accomplish more by looking at the REAL intent of this legislation...promoted and supported by the Insurance Industry.

Absolutely insane, most illegal aliens can't even read the road signs and it will just encourage more illegal's to sneak in the country.
The majority of our road signs are not international. Additionally many/most illegal's have never even driven a vehicle in their own countries. Being able to read the following non international signs is required to have a drivers license.
