Mexican Tourism Suffering Due To Crime (And Little Mexico's All Across America)

Bookmark and Share

Tourism is down in Mexico and many businesses there claim is due to crimes being committed against tourists. I tend to think it may have a little more to do with the fact that most Americans in cities - and even rural areas - can experience the "joys" of Mexico by heading down the street to their local run down illegal alien havens that have taken root all across this country over the past decade and a half.

Why spend money to head south of the border and put your life at risk when you can get the same threats, dirty looks and feeling of being in a third world hellhole by just driving down the street?

I also firmly believe that Americans are increasingly getting sick of the arrogant Mexican government and their meddling, not only in our national politics, but in local politics via their consulates here. The continued rash statements that America is the root of all of their problems and that it is we Americans who are to blame for every single act of criminality in their country. From the "demand" for drugs that "fuels" their drug industry, to their cries of racism at every turn when we want our laws enforced here, to their continued inclusion as fact in their schools that the southern part of the United States was stolen by us and that it is still a part of Mexico.

The US State Department has long warned American tourists about Mexico, its crime and the shakedowns by corrupt police there.

I personally think that the reason tourism is down is that Americans will only put up with so much bullshit before they reject having anything to do with people who continue to hate them.

AP

Americans have long tolerated shakedowns by police who boost salaries by pulling over motorists for alleged traffic violations, and tourists know parts of Baja are a hotbed of drug-related violence. ...

Lori Hoffman, a San Diego-area emergency room nurse, said she was sexually assaulted Oct. 23 by two masked men in front of her boyfriend, San Diego Surfing Academy owner Pat Weber, who was forced to kneel at gunpoint for 45 minutes. They were at a campground with about 30 tents, some 200 miles south of the border.

The men shot out windows of the couple's trailer and forced their way inside, ransacked the cupboards and left with about $7,000 worth of gear, including computers, video equipment and a guitar.

Weber, who has taught dozens of students in Mexico over the last 10 years, plans to surf in Costa Rica or New Zealand. "No more Mexico," said Hoffman, who reported the attack to Mexican police. No arrests have been made.

...

News of harrowing assaults on American tourists has begun to overshadow th[e] appeal... In late November, as they returned from the Baja 1000 off-road race, a San Diego-area family was pulled over on the toll road by a car with flashing lights. Heavily armed men held the family hostage for two hours. They eventually released them but stole the family's truck.

...

"People are just saying, 'No way.' They don't want to deal with the risk," said [Aqua Adventures] owner Jen Kleck, who has sponsored trips to Baja about five times a year but hasn't been since July.

...

Tourist visits to Baja totaled about 18 million in 2007, down from 21 million the previous year, Escobedo said. Hotel occupancy dropped about 5 percentage points to 53 percent.

... One Saturday afternoon in October, masked bandits wielding pistols walked the streets and kidnapped two men — an American and a Spanish citizen — who were later released unharmed. Two people who were with them were shot and wounded.

LOL . .I notice that only those that have meet the local enforcement police, have gripes about Mexico, Keep your bad habits, your "Am American and I can do what i want" for your hometown. When you travel out of your own yard . .you are a guest, and you have to respect the place your visiting, funny I have traveled to Mexico for the last 20 years just about every other year, and I have yet to be in trouble while visiting. So why you find it hard to keep your nose out of the local police, is it maybe because you have a way of life that you are also in trouble here in the States ? You can't respect other peoples backyards . .STAY OUT !!! Drugs, yes there is drugs but mostly because AMERICANS are buying it !! IF THEY WOULD KEEP RECORDS OF DRUG USERS BUSTED IN MEXICO, you would be on a list of millions of UN-WELCOMED people to Mexico . .Don't like it . .STAY OUT !!! Drug lords, dealers have been made by the American system to satisfy your hunger for trash you put into your life.

It's true. There is no reason to visit Mexico. Just head to any crime ridden barrio slum in the Southwest of the USA or your local major urban city and there you'll find Mexico.

"their continued inclusion as fact in their schools that the southern part of the United States was stolen by us and that it is still a part of Mexico"

-Digger, you are an ignorant... I agree with you about the crime fact, but that is the same in the US, you just have to read the academic journals about crime, it is just that you are too dumb to look at your own backyard... I grew up in Mexico, and I know about history, and we are not thaught that the US stole part of Mexico, we are told that that part was sold to the US by the Mexican government, perhaps you should read a little bit more... and it is true about the morals of the Americans, that's why they are hated worldwide... although I do know people from the US that are worth saving.. I would put my hands in fire for them, but it is people like you that make the US a shit place to be...

Jesus, Well done! - I am studying Tourism and Crime in NZ, and all the nuinsense that goes around everywhere is scary...

So digger, don't be blind... and relax your american ass and open your mind...

All the best..

Alex

Well I could react in a negative way to this article because as a Mexican, articles like this are insulting.
True is that Mexico is not longer a safe country but is not safe for Mexican citizens, organized crime is not after tourists as they have no way in finding out in matter hours what foreigners' assets are and if their families will pay ransom for their relatives visiting Mexico if they were to be kidnapped.
It is such a shame that the north american woman mentioned in this article was raped while she was camping in Mexican territory. But it is a shame because nobody deserves to be victimized with such cruelty, but to say that this acts only happen in Mexico is ignorant.
It is unfortunate that crime even exists but be aware that it is not exclusive to Mexico.
Whoever wrote this article should be more responsible of his writing, yes you have the right to freedom of speech but with that right comes a responsibility and promoting hate is not professional and responsible.
The day that we all stop pointing fingers and work together as one, that day will be the day in which organized crime around the world will have their days numbered.

just to clarify one thing,

tourists getting in trouble in Mexico should be more careful. As a Mexican there are places in Mexico that i avoid like plague...Cancun, Acapulco, Tijuana, Rosarito...etc, etc, why? because all the young american kids go there and what do they do? they get drunk, they get silly and they get in trouble. So young american tourists...be smart as a tourist and care about your safety when visiting Mexico or any other country around the world, if you do not speak the language, if you do not know a native that you can trust, if you are not with responsible friends that can look after you... don't get drunk, wasted or high...don't try to flirt with the cute girl at the bar because she could be a drug dealer's girlfriend....helloooooooooooo!
