One of the holiest shrines in Iraq, the al-Askari shrine in Samarra, was damaged and the golden dome was destroyed when two suicide bombers blew themselves up next to it. Thousands came out to protest the bombing.

This makes me sad because it was such a beautiful and historic building. Stupid Terrorists! This just shows how savage they are (as if you needed any more examples beyond the beheadings) and how they do not appreciate civilization.

The terrorists were believed to be Sunni and the attack was made on a Shiite shrine in order to stir up hatred.

The blast happened early in the morning at the al-Askari shrine in Samarra, 90km (60 miles) north of Baghdad.

The al-Askari shrine, part of the Imam Ali al-Hadi mausoleum, is one of Shia Islam's holiest sites.

The compound contains the remains of the 10th and 11th imams, reputed to be direct descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.

This kind of stuff reminds me of the Taliban destroying thousand year old Buddha statues.
