Rita Cosby Leaves Fox News, Headed For MSNBC

Bookmark and Share

rita_cosby.jpg After not coming to an agreement to extend her contract, the gossipy Rita Cosby of Fox News, has left the channel and her anchor spot at The Big Story weekend edition. I can't say I ever particularly like Rita, she was too much into gossip and I always felt like I was sitting in the middle of a circle of women talking about soap opera's whenever she was on the tube. This comes on the heels of Heather Nauert departing for ABC News Now just a few days ago.

Variety

Fox News Channel will not renew a contract with weekend host Rita Cosby, as the two sides couldn't come to an agreement on an extension, the network said.

Cosby hosted "The Big Story Weekend Edition With Rita Cosby" at 9 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday at 6 p.m. she hosted "Fox News Live With Rita Cosby."

Cosby will leave the network immediately. No replacement host has been appointed, nor has a decision been made on the future of the shows, Fox News said.

The current news is that Rita is headed to MSNBC.
Rita Cosby will join MSNBC, it was announced today by Rick Kaplan, President of MSNBC. Cosby will start with the network in June and will anchor a daily evening program. In addition, she will serve as a special correspondent. Cosby’s program is in development and will debut in the fourth quarter.

A three-time Emmy Award winner, Cosby most recently served as host of Fox News Channel’s “The Big Story Weekend Edition” and “Fox News Live with Rita Cosby.” She is known for her exclusive interviews with top newsmakers, including her historic back-to-back interviews with former Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Cosby has also interviewed former Presidents Ford, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton. Cosby also made headlines with her exclusive Michael Jackson interview. Additionally, Cosby was granted a rare, private meeting with Pope John Paul II after receiving an exclusive letter from Timothy McVeigh explaining why he carried out the Oklahoma City bombing.

Fox's loss is Fox's gain...never saw the reason for the "noise" about Rita...I don't think she is the best in the business at all..Claudia has done a great job..Rita's cough a lot voice and ego got in her way, I think..
Good riddance...Keep on keeping on, FOX!

In response to Olivia's comment above... Fox's loss is Fox's loss! Rita was the best thing they had - what idiots to let her go. MSNBC is my new favorite channel!!

Posted by: Ray on June 9, 2005 03:15 AM

I Love Rita! She always asked the tough questions, and did a great job. I will miss her on Fox, but will be sure to catch her on MSNBC!

Posted by: Nancy McKeeman on June 11, 2005 06:24 PM

I just pulled up Rita Cosby to find out what happened to her, because I've missed her. I really like her alot and wish her the best.

Posted by: Dorothy Liles on June 13, 2005 01:07 PM

Fox has made a big mistake. Rita was the equivalent of a female Geraldo. Both have large egos, aggressivly pursue a story, dont pull punches in their interview, etc. Would fox let Geraldo go for a like reason?

Posted by: vera Long on June 13, 2005 07:38 PM

Rita Coby, You are The Best! If any one should leave Fox News, it would be Geraldo. I think he is pretty liberal. Best of Luck Rita!!!! I will miss you a lot on Fox - I will be changing channels to watch you on MSNBC.

Posted by: Carol Frecker on June 15, 2005 10:41 AM

Good Luck Rita!
The Big Story was the one bright star in our Saturday night. Dan Abrams is also one of our favorites. I can see we will be tuned to MSNBC every night now.

Best Regards,
Dan J.

She was not only hard on the eyes but on the ears - always sounded winded/over-hyped and out of breath (perhaps she's out of shape.) She also speaks too fast and really needs someone to work with her on her nasal whine and enunciation. Good riddance.

Posted by: don l.ewis on June 27, 2005 11:21 AM

Rita,
My wife and I will now be watching you on another network. Glad you are still in the business.Things change and life goes on, and you will be a better person for it. Good luck from Kansas!!!!!

I realized I hadn't seen Rita for awhile. You wouldn't pay her??????What were you thinking?????? I loved her coverage on the Peterson case, and Jacko also. Big loss. And I thought Fox news could do no wrong. Bill, did you know about this?

Posted by: Sandi Hawkins on July 2, 2005 08:21 PM

I did a search looking for Rita. Omg, I can't believe Fox let her go,I'm so upset. I love Rita. Don't worry Fox will be begging to get her back.
I only watch Fox for my news.Well, you know what that means, I will be watching Rita on MSNBC now.
I miss you Rita, good luck to you, you are in the same league as O'reilly in my opinion. Hey, Bill, how could you let this happen! Miami sends you mucho amor!

Posted by: GINGER ANTON on July 8, 2005 12:47 PM

Rita, I will miss you. Yes you talk fast, so what, many do. You were also fast in getting down to the real deal--you will be missed. Fox news made a bad deal when they let you go. You are who you are and the way you sound when talking is fine with most of us. The rest of you should fix your glass house--idiots!! Best to you Rita!!!!

Posted by: Rose Hammonds on July 10, 2005 06:38 PM

Rita, My husband and I have been wondering what happened to you so I decided to click on the internet and find out. We love FoxNews and hate that you have left. I'm sure we'll be switching over to MSNBC more when your new show is own. Fox made a big mistake, you're one of the best. Good luck!

Posted by: Pat Cummings on July 11, 2005 06:58 PM

I must say that I enjoyed some of Ritas work but could not get past her manly voice. I'll watch her on MSNBC, with my mute button and reading the captions!!!!!

Posted by: Mary on July 23, 2005 03:00 AM

I thought Rita was did an outstanding job and I always looked forward to her interviews, even if her EGO did get in the way, as noted previously.
If the exit-door is still open, maybe they can get rid of that "clown" Mike Jerrick. His attempts at humor are sorely lacking and embarrassing. I'll drop my anchor at CSPAN pending his "sooner than later" departure.

Posted by: Dennis on July 24, 2005 06:05 PM

Rita, Just found where you were. Fox's loss but MSNBC;s gain. You are the best. Will watch much more of MSNBC now. Good Luck! Dot

Posted by: Dot Gunter on July 25, 2005 04:55 PM

i did not like your fast talking raspy voice and always turned you off, is it possible you can get mouthy E.D.a job over there with you,? PLEASE.!!!

Posted by: dennis mather on July 26, 2005 06:09 AM

Rita had no depth or grasp of political and internatioanl affairs. Further, she never displayed a sharp intellect needed for a top flite journalist. That is the reason Fox assigned her to bimbo typy gossipy interviews. FOX did the right thing to get rid of her.

Posted by: Chatm on July 29, 2005 10:15 PM

Rita, I miss you! In fact I sent an email to Fox News a while ago to find out where you were. I was hoping you were just on vacation. However, I did not receive an answer, so today I YAHOOED you. GOOD LUCK!

Posted by: Lou Ellis on August 5, 2005 02:14 PM

I was missing Rita too and starting looking to see what is going on with her. So sorry she has left FOX. I think they made a huge mistake.
I 've noiced some new faces lately on Fox. My mother taught me if you cant anything nice dont say it. So I will keep quiet..But they could take the faces back to where they got them.
I WANT RITA BACK.

Posted by: Doris J on August 6, 2005 09:48 PM

I though Rita Cosby was kind of irritating. Whenever she was on air, she was always talking of her "SOURCES". I think that was all she could say. Before I read the article above, I thought Fox fired Cosby because they told her to lose weight and she couldn't. All the other girls in Fox are trim. That's it!!!

Posted by: MacJmae on August 8, 2005 10:40 PM

Hey, Rita!
Holla at a playa. You sure were the prettiest thing on Fox News. My Uncle is dying to get your autograph. Any chance you might have a sweepstakes one day?

Posted by: Gabriel Blackmon on August 10, 2005 04:49 PM

Rita is gone so good luck to her..She will need it! I have watched news anchors all of my life as having a brother who was one locally. Rita's on air presense leaves alot to be desired. She's many times disheveled, way too much make up, and is not pleasent tolook at or listen to. To her credit she has done some significant work but after reading about her past news work at Fox I wonder how much of it was really hers.

Posted by: Cyndi on August 12, 2005 03:38 PM

As Delbert McClinton say's "when Rita leaves Rita's gone" and for me that is good news. If you want to listen to an ego maniac repeat over and over "exclusive to me" while she is gasping for oxygen she your girl.

The IQ of Fox and MSNBC both went up. I guess that is win win.

Posted by: Michael Brown on August 29, 2005 10:24 AM

Has anyone mentioned that she sounds just like the late, great Divine, star of "Pink Flamingos"?

Posted by: George on August 30, 2005 06:13 PM

Rita, perhaps you should spend a couple days in the ravaged areas hit by Katrina before you go nutso over the looting situation. I'll bet you that once your antiperspirant wore off you'd be off to Wal-mart too.

Posted by: dave on August 30, 2005 06:52 PM

I think Rita is hot -- big B;s and great lips. I would love to do a story on her.

Posted by: Jeff on September 3, 2005 07:32 PM

Unfreakinbelievable! (and NOT in a good way)Before her first "Live & Direct" show aired last week I had never heard of Rita Cosby. Her interview of two women and a baby being reunited at the Astrodome offended me so much that I emailed MSNBC with the particulars. How dare she show up with ridiculously heavy (almost theatrical) makeup....bright red lips, bleached blonde hair and a fire engine red outfit!!! It was grossly inappropiate and highly offensive. Could she be THAT out of touch or is she just so incredibly vain and self absorbed? Did it occur to her how her "glamorous appearance" might affect these poor souls in the midst of catastrophe? These people haven't bathed in almost a week....they've been living amongst human waste and dead bodies! What the hell is wrong with her?
As for her interviewing style....her mannerisms and facial expressions show a "disconnection", insincerity and a preoccupation with her "appearance". I laughed when I read Georges message 30 Aug. Oh my God she DOES sound like "Divine". I am a huge John Waters fan and have seen all of "Divine's" pictures. Rita LOOKS like a man in drag...she SOUNDS like a man in drag!
I told MSNBC that Rita's voice sounds like a character I saw on "Southpark". I think she played a school teacher. "Miss Chokesondick". Does anyone remember her?
With an unbearably irritating voice like Rita's she needs to find a new profession, quickly please. Hey........how bout' Drag Queen !!!

Posted by: Caroline on September 4, 2005 09:04 AM

Goodbye Rita! So won't miss the wheezing, gasping, lurching -- it's like watching someone do a BAD Joan Rivers impersonation. I too was taken aback on her appearance and demeanor while interviewing refugees at the Astrodome on MSNBC. And I agree with an earlier post comparing her to Geraldo! Both Rivera and Cosby never seem to ask an actual question during an interview, just blather on and on and leave the poor interviewee lost and unable to respond with more than just a mildly confused look . Why do they get "big" interviews? Because they never really get around to asking any questions! When I see either of their faces, I cannot switch the channel fast enough! Good Riddance!

Posted by: JR on September 5, 2005 01:28 PM

I was wondering where Rita went. I used to be an avid Fox News watcher, but now I only watch MSNBC. Too bad Fox News didn't keep her. As a result I, and most of my friends will now faithfully tune in to MSNBC at 9:00 ET to see lovely Rita.

Posted by: Steve Fobert on September 5, 2005 07:12 PM

Rita was likeable enough but she was one of my least favorites. No loss. I'm big on loyalty so anyone who defects Fox News is a traitor! Let 'em move on to the looney left stations!

Posted by: Patti Ross on September 13, 2005 01:03 PM

Listening to Rita reminds me of chewing foil, perhaps chewing foil and celery at the same time. I am glad that she has left fox for one reason, I always felt that she strayed too far from the basics of a topic with her speculation. She would blow up side notes that should not even be focused upon. I believe that she was dropped because she could not see the fine line between facts, and her assumptions.

Posted by: James on September 16, 2005 12:58 AM

I watched Rita tonight reporting live from Galveston Tx in the path of hurricane Rita.I think she is a brave and exellent reporter. FNC should have hung on to her. I like her and Joe Scarborough on MSNBC.I am now switching over from Fox whenever they are on.

Posted by: Dan DeSalvo North Bend Oregon on September 23, 2005 02:23 AM

Rita's voice tones sounded a lot like mine. The only thing is that I'm a male! What a low sounding voice she has! Perhaps that New York lifestyle is to stressful or something? Over-all though, she was nice, but should I waste time watching MSNBC for her? Naw, I don't think so... :-)

Posted by: Randall on September 23, 2005 03:55 PM

I THINK RITA IS GREAT111 YOU CAN TELL SHE IS ALL IN TO HER JOB AND TAKES IT SERIOUS. ALL THESE CRAPPY COMMENTS ARE JELIOUS PEOPLE! I know Fox will have regrets.. and MSNBC has GIAINED!! Anyone who has ambition like Rita deserves the best. My sister went to school with her nad I know her from when she was a broadcasted in Charlotte, NC. She has worked hard to get where she is... no silver spoon in her mpouth at birth either... so all of you that just wish you were her... find your own dreams and stop putting other that have one down!!

Posted by: paula on September 23, 2005 06:04 PM

I cant believe Fox let Rita go!I watch Fox around the clock for All news that means anything! I also have followed every Rita Cosby story on Fox. Unbelievable that they (Fox) let her go! Shep and Rita are the greatest in my book. Well I guess I will have to turn the channel when Rita is reporting on MSNBC.What ashame. All these comments on her voice and breathing is terrible! I didn't listen to Rita for her voice,it was the way she presented the stories, stories that meant something. I feel sorry for Fox....WAY TO GO MSNBC!!!!!Rick Allen in Nashville,Tn

Posted by: Rick Allen on September 25, 2005 03:08 AM

Happened to be flipping thru the channels last evening, thought I heard a Fog Horn but I was mistaken. it was Rita. Rita, you're going to need a bigger piece of paper to hide that fat tush of yours.

Posted by: Homer Noodlemen on September 25, 2005 12:42 PM

Cudo's for FOX, they got rid of ole Turbo Tongue.

It's not bad enough you don't shut up, ever! you have to look at the mouth of whomever you're interviewing. Any idea how annoying that is watching someone swiping their nose all the time. I say you in full figure covering Hurricane Rita and you have a figure that displaces more weight then the USS Nimitz.
Now if you could only take Geraldo with you the both of you can grandstand elsewhere.

Posted by: Homer Noodlemen on September 25, 2005 12:49 PM

So THAT'S who Rita Cosby is... thanks folks. I never watch Fox (they treat their viewers like they're uninformed idiots) so when ads for her show started to dominate MSNBC, I wondered why there was such a huge push. Now I get it. She's a spoil of war, in a sense, between MSNBC and Fox. Well, I gotta tell ya, Fox won this round. Good Lord.

She's a sensationalist, running with whatever pointless story allows her to ask questions designed to cultivate emotional responses instead of intellectual ones. And yes...! That voice! I watched her early MSNBC shows and I thought "Oh, what bad luck. She gets sick the same time her new show begins." Weeks have gone by, and it still looks difficult for her to speak. She looks like she has to literally force the words out of her throat. It's damned annoying.

If there's something wrong, she has my sympathy, but I'd say whatever the matter, Rita, it's ending your television journalism career. That, and your "ooh! ooh! Did you hear?" style of reporting...

Posted by: Timbo on September 30, 2005 01:56 AM

Haha, exactly Timbo! "ooh! ooh! did you hear?" is right on the button.

Posted by: Digger on September 30, 2005 07:58 AM

Rita Cosby has got to be the most annoying and uninformed journalist ever and thats no exaggeration. Her voice is inexplicably frustrating and her questions continue to land way off the mark of the heart of the story.I hate Fox news and everything they stand for and MSNBC shot themself in the foot with this blatant move to even their stance to the left. Her show is like a car accident that happend already.

Posted by: khalid on October 3, 2005 08:44 PM

You may or may not like Rita Cosby as a journalist but the one thing that I'm always thinking when i see her is, "I bet she has really big tits!" EEs

Posted by: bill murray on October 8, 2005 11:08 AM

Happy to hear FOX finally let Rita go! I couldn't take her voice. Now FOX needs to cut Greta!

Posted by: Sharon Fitzsimmons on October 10, 2005 02:42 PM

Rita Cosby is the most annoying journalist I have ever heard. Ever. Her style and delivery are unbearable to listen to. Why would MSNBC hire her? Terrible...

Posted by: Dude05 on October 12, 2005 04:35 PM

I have to change channels every time good old Rita comes on with that razpy voice, or whatever the problem is. I will watch more Fox. Good choice.

Posted by: Bettie on October 30, 2005 09:06 AM

IMO, Rita Cosby's voice sounds like a pissed off Bill Parcells SCREAMING his Dallas Cowboys through a rough practice session. She has to be one of the most annoying noises to emanate from the tube. Initially, I watched/listened to her for ~15 minutes, then switched the channel to stop the pain. Dammit, that's 15 wasted minutes of my life that I'll never get back...

Posted by: neutral on November 13, 2005 05:20 AM

Does anyone know what is wrong with Rita's voice?? She must have some type of a problem the way she sounds and the way she has to grab those big breaths inbetween her words. She needs to change to another career where she is behind the camera and not in front of it. I can't stand to listen to her even if I am interested in the topic.

Posted by: Cheryl on November 24, 2005 05:30 PM

I can't stand Rita Cosby's voice. So much so that I don't even care about what she is saying. I can't get by it. Her voice, and huffing like she is always out of breath makes her a very annoying TV personality. The first few times I saw here I would listen for a few seconds, thinking that she must have been sick the previous times I saw here and that is why she talked liked a husky man with throat cancer. Nope. That's just the way she talks. Can't stand it! Just thinking about her annoying voice is pissing me off!!!!!!

Posted by: CantStandYa on November 28, 2005 12:49 PM

I cannot stand the woman's voice, not to mention the photo shots in her promos dont reflect her true weight....
a little outdated to be sure, amazing to me how a multi conglomerate like MSNBC would actually pay someone who obviously has voice issues and has to struggle and strain to get their words out.

Posted by: Larry on December 13, 2005 09:58 PM

One of the commentaries asked if anyone knows what is wrong with Rita's voice. Does anyone out there know? It is obviously a medical problem, but also interesting she chose tv journalism as a field and excelled in it. I always thought a great voice was a criteria for getting a job in front of a camera. I guess it no longer is. Too bad, because I too have to shut her off, even if the subject interests me.

Posted by: robin ely on January 22, 2006 11:36 AM

I could not be any happier to see that Rita landed a nice TV spot with MSNBC. I'm sure Greta will be next. President FNC Roger Ailes (Republican-worked for Reagan Admin) did not want to renew Rita's contract because she was not openly pro Bush like the other brownies on Fox like Steve Doocy, Brian Kilmeade, ED HIll (Democrat-Kissing up to FOX), Tony Snow, Mort Kondrake (Democrat-Kissing up to FOX), etc. Yes, media is biased and FOX is the most biased network of all. FOXNEWS hosts constantly defend GW Bush, no matter what the issue is. You have to wonder if the Bush Administration donates large sums of money to FOX.

Posted by: John - Harrison, NY on February 18, 2006 11:01 PM

In response to Ray who was in response to my comment on Rita's leaving Fox...glad to see you go, also..go onto MSNBC...You can enjoy seeing Rita "bomb" there, too.

Posted by: Olivia Alford on March 13, 2006 10:20 PM

I am disturbed by the insensitivity of those of you who have made negative comments about Rita's voice. While working in broadcasting many years ago, I developed a speech disorder that may be similar to what Rita has. After 18 painful months of going on the air daily straining to talk, a voice specialist diagnosed the condition as neurological in nature. I chose to switch careers, but I still have the emotional scars. Why is it that people show compassion for those who have other physical disabilities yet thoughtlessly ridicule someone with a voice disorder? Do you think that Rita is completely unaware that there is a problem with her voice? I hope that she stays on the air long enough to find a cure or treatment for her condition. And I hope that viewers will forgive her for her imperfection.

Posted by: Paul on August 9, 2006 10:35 PM

GEEEEE-YAWD!!! Rita Cosby is about as bad as they come.. Her voice sounds like a man's.. Can't figure out who put her in show business and for that matter, how she got any farther than public access in smalltown, USA.. HORRIBLE

And the quality of her journalism is comparable to tabloids, at best.. Hell.. I think even the Enquirer does a better job at reporting the news!!!

She reminds me of that character that Jim Carrey played on In Living Color.. The bodybuilder he-she..

May Rita Cosby's news career go down in flames like the 20 packs of cigarettes she must smoke everyday!!!!!

I always thought Rita was the sexiest woman in TV news... that beautiful face, full lips and voluptuous body... (sigh). I'd love to cup those big, heavy breasts.

Posted by: scott on October 13, 2007 10:18 PM

Looks like Rita will be saying goodby to MSMBC, whats next for her. A reporter for STAR ? To bad, great looking broad, bt a good reporter would have checked her facts and source. Dam shame but looks like she will make howard k ( a real scumbag, but not a fag ) a rich man

Posted by: Dick Sicario on October 16, 2007 10:58 PM

I am SOOOO glad Rita Cosby is gone. She lacks intelligence, insight, and maturity. That squeaky voice is not what a TV audience needs to hear. She acts like a college brat interested in stirring up trouble rather than reporting facts........Glad she is gone. I dread seeing her on anything else but my remote works really good.......so...click, click

Posted by: julia on September 3, 2008 09:44 PM

Hi - Rita, is a Fine Lady and was good at her job. She will be miss by many -Fox News Lost a Good One.

Posted by: Ron on November 2, 2008 11:04 AM

Her raspy voice may have been from having to breathe really hard and deep whjenb her mouth was too full of something else in an attempt to keep/get a job. But I for one would not kick her out of bed or tell her to get off her knees. Got some nice big breasts for sure and I have always liked big azzed women like her. Besides she is made for comfort not speed. Want a sport model go for Laurie Dhue

Lousy reporter but she did give me a stiffy!
