300 Filipino Contractors Strike At Camp Cooke In Iraq

Bookmark and Share

Well this is just the strangest thing. It seems 300 Filipinos contracted to work for Prime Projects International and Kellog Brown and Root at Camp Cooke in the province of Taji, Iraq have went on strike after a contract dispute. Prime Projects International supplies Kellog Brown and Root with manpower. 500 other nationals joined the strike as well.

Khaleej Times

It was not specified what their complaints were, but the ministry said the Filipinos and the agencies that employed them failed to agree on certain demands prompting the strike.

The Filipinos were to have been repatriated amid the deadlock, but the Philippine charge d’affaires Ricardo Endaya managed to convince them to enter dialogue and temporarily return to their posts.

US-based Kellog manages non-combat related operations of military installations in Iraq, while Prime Projects recruits Filipino workers for them.

Despite a travel ban to Iraq, the Philippines is the biggest supplier of manpower for US-led coalition forces, with an estimated 6,000 Filipinos working in various camps.

Philippine Star

Endaya reported that at least 500 workers from India, Sri Lanka and Nepal joined the strike led by the Filipino workers.

...

In his report, Endaya said PPI held talks with the 300 overseas Filipino workers, but added the talks remained deadlocked. As a result of the deadlock, the company said it is ready to prepare the return of the OFWs to the Philippines aboard two chartered flights via Dubai International Airport.

Endaya met with the 300 OFWs in Camp Cooke and convinced them to end their labor dispute and return to work.

This is an intriguing story, especially when you consider the disgusting conditions under which Filippino and other SE workers labor in Saudi Arabia. I believe it is Thailand which has revoked all licenses of agencies which hire to the Saudis. The women are raped and tortured, the men are beaten. Suicide is common.

I do not blame the Phillipino strikers for one second. Im working at Victory base Baghdad and have observed how especially the Phillipino Females are treated by the so called Manager that just started at the female camp and by PPI and KBR in general.
It is based on human trafficing and slave labour. They work for as little as $600 a month while there bosses (managers) earn at least $10 000 a month. They have curfews at 10 at night to comply with and if they are late they are threatened with dismissal. They are not allowed to date anybody and cannot go to the PX to buy sanitary ware that females need with out being escorted. They are called and accused of prostitution y the manager that is suppose to look after their wellfare while working abroad. If they object to this type of abusive language and treatmet then they are dismissed or the threat of being dismissed place upon them.
Now my question is who allow this particular manager or PPI and KBR as a whole to treat the people this way and why is everybody, even the US Military turning a blind eye to this. These people are good enough to clean up after everybody, toilets, showers, offices, public areas, kitchen and DFACs and to do their dirty and stinking laundry and then they are treated like scum and human thrash. Has any one have the right to do this?
Just because the people are from a poor country does not allow anybody to treat them this way.
I wish and pray to GOD that somebody from PPI or KBR or the Military will read this and stop this human trafficing and unfair labour practice that has been going on for two long.
I am a syphaziser to these beautiful people and if anybody can assist me by giving my contact email addresses as to where i can officialy lodge a complaint against PPI and KBR and this Manager at the female camp at Liberty inside Camp Vicory Baghdad, Iraq please email me at iminiraq4u2@yahoo.com and let us tell the world about this
