Bernie over at Plank's Constant has an interesting post on the draconian ways of our current sexual predator laws. He also notes that in this day and age sexual offense laws are sometimes more strict than those for murder and are actually encouraging criminals to murder their victims because they would get a lesser sentence.
Bernie also points to a case in the super nanny state of Illinois a few years ago where a man chastising a 14-year-old girl for walking in front of his car was charged with a sex offense and forced to register as a sex offender. Great, so now even law abiding citizens and good Samaritans are being slapped with sexual predator status.
If I had the energy I could list thousands of cases every year where perfectly harmless acts by perfectly innocent citizens are converted into some sort of sex crime by overzealous prosecutors that end up requiring these poor, unlucky souls to register as sex offenders even though there was no violence and no one was even threatened with violence and in almost all cases where there is no victim at all, except the innocent party who was unfairly arrested. We have gone completely nuts.
We hear enough of this, Its now just that there is no innocent people, only guilty people. If you own a gun, you're considered a threat. You speak your mind, you are a target. If you defend yourself, you are guilty. You see it happen all the time.
