Berkeley Couple Hang Effigy Of Soldier By Noose On Sacramento Home

Bookmark and Share

soldier_effigy.jpg A couple that lives in Berkeley but own a second home up here in Sacramento decided to hang an effigy of a soldier by a noose on the side of their house. The effigy, which was a soldiers uniform with an American flag stuffed in to form the head, also had a sign hung from the neck that read "Your tax dollars at work". In addition to the effigy there were flags of the Palestinians and Iraq hanging in the windows.

An unknown individual went on the property this afternoon and ripped down the effigy and laid it in front of the house on the sidewalk.

The asshole Berkley couple, Steve and Virginia Pearcy, who obviously have benefited from the freedom of our country both through freedom of speech, the ability to walk the streets safely and hold positions that allow them to own two homes did not go on camera to defend their position. Instead all they did was release a statement saying "There will always be people who are offended by political speech, and the most important forum of all ... is one's own residence. The First Amendment is meaningless unless dissent is allowed."

Of course freedom of speech also allows me to say

FUCK YOU STEVE AND VIRGINIA PEARCY!

Sacramento BEE

"I'm a huge military supporter and I've got some good friends over in Iraq right now," said Mike Coates, 25, of Fair Oaks. Coates heard about the issue on the radio and drove by Wednesday afternoon with a ladder in his pick-up truck to take down the effigy. It was already gone.

"I'm outraged," said neighbor Marque Cohen, who has contacted police and city officials to get the effigy and other signs and flags taken removed. "We have our men and women in uniform that are dying to protect our rights and I think it's a disgrace that somebody would be allowed to hang a U.S. soldier in effigy in front of their house."

Neighbors should hang effigies of the Pearcy's from the side of their houses.

"benefited"

I don't blame people for being outraged.

But given current context, most likely (I cannot be sure, of course) this was a cretinish protest against the invasion of Iraq. And commenting on your juxtaposition, there are good reasons to believe this war was not at all necessary to protect the nation and preserve the 'benefits' you mention.

They should have razed those liberals' house to the ground and drove the worthless vermin into the sea.

I am in full support of the Pearcy's. Finally, someone with sense stands up for this war with a retarded and unknown cause. Maybe if you people read real articles online instead of listening to that guy you call Bush, you'll see how many men and women have committed suicide because of distress and no longer wanting to be a part of the war. Why are you supporting troops who don't even want to fight for you in the first place??? You losers that watch Fox News... they are so biased. If you want real news, you should watch the global news channels. They actually say what's going on, instead of these clueless news stations that we call CNN. You should not be complaining about the effigy. He has done nothing wrong. All you're trying to do is find a way to demoralize him and neglect him of his rights. The first amendment clearly says "Freedom of Speech." Nowhere does it say, "Freedom of Speech... unless you're against the government." You and the government need to find something else to blame Pearcy of because he has done absolutely nothing wrong. If there's anyone who committed a crime, it's the guy that tore down the effigy. That's called "trespassing." I wonder if he's heard of that...

There was a time that treason like this was punished, society was more civil, and there was no such thing as a rapper like eminem who sings of cruelty to animals, drug use, explicit sex acts in a parking lot, murder, dismemberment, hiding a body for the "cops to find", the size of his penis, parental drug use, G-strings, and magic mushrooms growing in cow dung. Now it's called "freedom of speech" and the Pearcy's treason is called "healthy dissent".

Bah. I'd like to see people like Pearcy prosecuted for treason and sedition, because that's precisely what it is.

The Pearcy's should be allowed to place anything on display from their own home. Telling them to remove it or removing it for them is violating the First Amendment. Even though other people may not feel the same way they feel about the war, the effigy is hanging from their home and not somebody else's home. All they need to do is ignore it when they walk pass if they don't feel comfortable with it. Nobody has the right to control what people display from their own property, much less order them to remove it or trespass onto their property to remove it. We are all allowed to express whatever we want, under the First Amendment. If other people don't agree, all they can do is ignore it and choose not to feel uncomfortable with it. Otherwise, anybody can complain about something making them uncomfortable. Pretty soon, you can't even wear whatever clothing you want in your own front yard anymore.

I admire the Pearcy's for exercising their First Amendment rights and am very sorry that people dictated what they could not could not display from their own home.

I would love to contact the Pearcy's if possible. If they wish to contact me, they can use my e-mail.

By that logic Tracy, if I lived next to you and wanted to erect a sculpture of a giant bloody vagina on my front lawn then "you should just ignore it" as you walk your 6 year old by it on the way to school everyday.

I understand your free speech point, but there are limits.

Just let them do whatever they want. It is an emotional issue for a lot of people. So, they can express the way they feel about what is going on in this tragic world. Those disageeing can always publicly express their opinions too. That couple was not telling others that they couldn't do something similar in support of their personal opinions about the war.

My goodness, you see pro-lifers and pro-choicers posting slogans all over the place about how they feel. Nobody tell them to remove their postings, even when they do it on public property.

Just let everybody express publicly what they want, especially when it is a hot current issue.

Re: Cao's comment: Honey, those things Eminem sings about have been going on for years. The music doesn't make it happen... that is of course, until people start making a big deal about the music.

Digger, I commend you for saying "fuck you" to the Pearcey's, and fuck this fucking fucked up war. Put a big slashed up vulva in front of your house and I will also say "fuck you" as well as "you're a fucking pig."

The noose was bad taste, but I think a call for attention, which y'all willingly gave.

I would like to see an effigy of an Iraqi civilian dead, because I believe it is the citizens of Iraq who have done the real suffering.

So much furor ? Perhaps a nerve was touched. Perhaps yall missed the part of kindergarten where we learned to respect differences. Ot the Sunday school lesson on turning the other cheek. Our failure to be Christians after 9 11 is the nail in the cross of our own Crucifixion.
