The Proposed $180 Billion Trans-Texas Corridor

Bookmark and Share

There is a proposal to spend $180 billion on a new corridor that would run through Texas from Mexico to Oklahoma. $180 billion! Private companies are also sticking their hat in the ring and plan to profit from the tolling system.

Fox News

The proposed Trans-Texas corridor (search) would cost more than $180 billion and consist of six car lanes, four truck lanes, up to six rail lines and a utility zone for electricity, gas and data-network connections. The potential 800-mile mega-highway would run from Mexico to Oklahoma.

Waco Herald-Tribune

The corridor's design and alignment will be determined in the next few years as the state and Cintra, a Spanish engineering and financing firm, roll out segments of the project. The Texas Transportation Commission selected a proposal by Cintra to invest $7.2 billion to begin building the corridor's first stage a toll road between Dallas and San Antonio.

...

Cintra's involvement sparked concerns among McLennan County commissioners that a private business would set a route for the corridor that best served its interests.

Russell said Cintra's investment enables the state to jump-start needed infrastructure improvement that it wouldn't be able to otherwise afford. Cintra stands to profit from the tollway, but the corridor is a state highway and is subject to the same public review and design processes as all other state facilities, he said.

The Trans Texas Corridor is one of Texas Gov. Rick Perry's pet projects. It is a massive toll road that will swallow up over a half million acres of rural land via eminent domain. That land will become government property used not only for transportation but as State owned rental property in direct competition with local business. Governor Perry's aide, Dan Shelley, worked for Cintra, the Spanish firm that won the $7.2B bid for the road project. Unfortunately, few voters know much about it.
