Beltway Traffic Jammed
The age of sexual consent today is 18 years. A minor can petition the courts to be sexually emancipated at an earlier age. Parents often do this when, for instance, a rebellious daughter refuses to obey her parents' request to end sexual promiscuity. Although a court hearing seems like a formidable step, it is available and probably more minors should take advantage of it. But in general, I think most young people are incapable of making realistic judgments about the consequences of having sex. The teen-age pregnancy rate is not simply the result of ignorance about protected sex; it is also the result of teenagers misusing our society's misguided sexual permissiveness. Very little good flows from teenager girls having babies out of wedlock.
